The Sexy, Double-Edged Sword of Boyfriend Dungeon's Queer Community

Over the five years of developing Boyfriend Dungeon, the Kitfox team ended up taking a crash course in queer representation, and we’re here to share those learnings with you! In this talk, we’ll discuss what we learned about queer-friendly community management, and the challenges that such a multi-faceted, constantly-evolving diversity can pose as a developer.

Kitfox Games has a diverse team with many different sexualities and gender expressions, but we still could never have literally all kinds of the queer experience embodied on our team. So no matter how inclusive we wanted to be, we would always have to listen, learn, and grow as we designed our characters, wrote our romances, and created content.

Boyfriend Dungeon became embroiled in a rather infamous bit of controversy on launch, which we’ll dissect as part of this targeted post-mortem. But even something as simple as celebrating Pride month on your social media can be fraught, if you aren’t careful!

We’ll share both high-level strategy and practical tips for how best to welcome queer folk to enjoy your content, and engage actively with your community, while minimizing their likelihood of hurting each other or your dev team.
